We couldn't make it to Ushuaia as soon as expected due to some troubles with our flights (LAN actually cancelled our flights and we had to reschedule them for a later date for the additional cost of 350 USD!). We arrived there on a cold and cloudy Tuesday morning and went to find a hostel where to spend the night. All the hostels we found were full and we tried a different approach - buy bus tickets to Punta Arenas (Chile) on our way to Torres del Paine. It turned out we had to spend 3 days in Ushuaia before there was a bus we could take and we were lucky enough to find a hostel in the last moment (when we were on our way to the camping in the national park).
We just walked around the city on Tuesday afternoon (it's quite big, especially in summer) and we decided to hike all the way up to El Glaciar Martial. Luckily for us the dark comes pretty late (around 10 pm) so we had all the time to go check it out and make our first hike in Patagonia/Tierra del Fuego.
Since we had enough time to spend in Ushuaia we decided to spend the next day in the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. And it was the best decision! We took a mini van to reach the park (it's more than 12km away from Ushuaia) and after paying our tickets the driver let us near the last post office in the world (or so they say). We then took "la costera" which is a long trail all along the coast. When we reached its end we didn't have enough time for another long trail (there are 2 more besides la costera in the park) we just had lunch and walked around. Wonderful!
And what better to spend our last day in Ushuaia then to go on a tour to see some penguins? I know, there's nothing better so this is exactly what we did! We chose to go with Paludine because they offered trips with a small boat for up to 8 people. We spent around 4 hours in the Beagle Channel and it was a lot of fun! Big up for the sea lions!
